When AI Talks Nonsense
Sometimes AI plays "telephone" — the message changes along the way.
Imagine you're reading a sentence and the last word is missing. You try to guess which word fits best. Sometimes you get it right — but sometimes you're completely wrong.
That's exactly how AI works! It predicts the next most likely word, one after another. Most of the time it works well — but sometimes the AI picks words that sound right but are actually wrong. And the tricky part: it acts like it's right anyway.
AI Sometimes Guesses — and Sounds Super Smart Doing It
Here's something important you need to know: AI doesn't actually know anything. It learned from millions of texts which words are likely to go together. But sometimes it guesses wrong.
The tricky part: it still sounds totally convincing!
For example, an AI might say:
"The book 'The Flying Penguin' by author Maria Sternfeld is a bestseller about Antarctic adventures."
Sounds good, right? But: This book doesn't exist! And neither does the author. The AI made both up.
This Is Called "Hallucination"
When an AI makes something up and acts like it's true, experts call it a hallucination. Strange word, right? It means the AI "sees" something that isn't there.
This happens, for example, with:
- Made-up books and authors — The AI invents titles and names
- Wrong facts — "The Earth has 3 moons" (it doesn't!)
- Wrong math answers — AI can sometimes make mistakes in math, especially with tricky problems
- Made-up links — Websites that don't even exist
!Golden rule
Not everything that sounds smart is actually true! If you're not sure, ask an adult or look it up in a book or on a trustworthy website.
How Do You Spot Nonsense?
Here are a few signs that the AI might not be telling the truth:
- It sounds too perfect — When everything sounds super smooth and simple, be careful
- You've never heard of it — When the AI mentions a book or person you can't find anywhere
- It contradicts itself — Sometimes the AI says two different things in the same text
- Numbers and dates — AI often mixes up numbers and years
▶Want to know more?
AI works like this: it has read lots of texts and learned which words often appear together. When you ask it something, it thinks: "Which word probably comes next?"
Sometimes the answer fits perfectly. But sometimes the most likely word combination produces something that isn't true at all — but sounds real.
Imagine you had to finish a sentence without thinking: "The capital of Australia is ___." Many people say "Sydney" — because it's well-known. But the correct answer is Canberra! AI sometimes "thinks" in a similar way.
