Deep Research with AI

Systematic Research with AI
Deep research goes beyond a quick question-and-answer interaction. It means systematically examining a topic from multiple perspectives, analyzing various sources, and building a well-founded understanding. AI can significantly accelerate this process -- when used correctly.
The Deep Research Workflow
Systematic research with AI follows a structured approach:

Step 1: The Right Research Question
The quality of a research project depends on the quality of the initial question. AI can help refine vague questions:
Vague Question: "What is the state of AI regulation?"
Precise Questions (developed with AI):
- "What AI regulations are currently in effect or planned in the EU, the US, and China?"
- "How do the regulatory approaches of the EU (AI Act) and the US (Executive Orders) differ?"
- "What impact does the EU AI Act have on companies that deploy AI systems in Europe?"
*Question Cascade
Start with a broad question and have the AI derive 5-10 more specific sub-questions from it. This gives you a roadmap for the research and prevents you from overlooking important aspects.
Step 2: Mapping the Topic Field
Before going deep, you need an overview. Have the AI structure the topic field:
- Key terms and definitions: What technical terms do you need to know?
- Actors and institutions: Who are the relevant organizations, researchers, companies?
- Timeline: What important milestones have there been?
- Controversies: Where are there different positions?
- Related topics: What adjacent topics are relevant?
Step 3: Multi-Source Analysis
The most valuable research draws on different types of sources:
Primary sources: Original studies, legal texts, official reports
- AI can help find and summarize these
- But: always check the original source, not just the AI summary
Secondary sources: Trade journalism, analyses, commentaries
- AI can contrast different perspectives
- Useful: "Summarize the main arguments for and against [position X]"
Expert opinions: Interviews, conference presentations, professional blogs
- AI can compare the positions of various experts
- But: verify whether cited statements actually exist
!Source Blindness
AI models do not distinguish between trustworthy and questionable sources. A layperson's blog post has the same weight for the AI as a peer-reviewed study. Evaluating source quality remains a human task.
Step 4: Synthesis and Pattern Recognition
The last step is often the most valuable: AI can help identify overarching patterns from many individual pieces of information:
- "What commonalities do these three studies share?"
- "Where do the sources contradict each other?"
- "What conclusions can be drawn from the collected data?"
- "What questions remain open and require further research?"
Understanding
Deep Research with AI Search Functions
Some AI systems offer specialized deep research functions that automatically search multiple sources, analyze them, and compile them into a comprehensive report. These functions combine web search with AI analysis and often deliver reports with source citations.
Advantages:
- Automated multi-source analysis saves considerable time
- Source citations facilitate verification
- Different perspectives are systematically included
Limitations:
- The selection of searched sources is not transparent
- Source quality varies and must be evaluated manually
- Summaries can lose nuances
iDeep Research as a Starting Point
AI-assisted deep research functions provide an excellent starting point but do not replace your own judgment. Use the results as a foundation and verify the most important claims against the original sources.
Application
Choose a current topic from your field and conduct a structured deep research: begin with the question cascade, map the topic field, analyze at least three different source types, and create a synthesis. Compare the AI-assisted result with what you would have accomplished without AI support in the same amount of time.
Reflection
Deep research with AI is not a shortcut but an accelerator. The quality of the result depends on your ability to ask the right questions, evaluate sources, and critically assess findings. In the next section, we'll explore how to systematically check AI-generated information for accuracy.
