Knowledge
The question "What does it cost?" sounds simple, but with AI coding tools it's surprisingly complex. There are fundamentally different pricing models, and actual costs depend heavily on your usage patterns.
Subscription-Based: Fixed Costs, Limited Usage
Examples: GitHub Copilot ($10/mo), Cursor ($20/mo), Windsurf Pro ($20/mo)
With subscription models, you pay a fixed monthly fee. That sounds straightforward, but there are nuances:
- Copilot Pro ($10/mo): Since June 1, 2026, includes $10 of monthly AI Credits (1 credit = $0.01), billed by token consumption rather than request quotas. Basic completion is unlimited. Larger allowances: Pro+ ($39/mo) or the new Copilot Max.
- Cursor Pro ($20/mo): Includes $20 monthly credit budget for premium models (Auto mode unlimited). After that, slower processing or top-up.
- Windsurf Pro ($20/mo): Includes a monthly credit budget for premium features.
Advantage: Predictable costs. You know at the start of the month what you'll pay. Disadvantage: Limits can be reached quickly with intensive use. Then you pay extra -- or wait.
Subscription-Based with AI Agent: Claude Code
Example: Claude Code (included in Claude Pro/Max)
Since 2025, Claude Code is included in Anthropic subscriptions:
- Claude Pro ($20/mo): Access to Claude Code with moderate usage limits
- Claude Max 5x ($100/mo): 5x limits -- for regular usage
- Claude Max 20x ($200/mo): 20x limits -- for intensive, daily usage
Advantage: Predictable costs like Cursor/Copilot. The Max plan can be significantly cheaper than API payments for heavy usage. Disadvantage: With light usage, you may be paying for capacity you don't use.
API-Based: Maximum Flexibility
Example: Claude Code via the Anthropic API
Alternatively, Claude Code can be used directly via the API -- pay-per-use without a subscription.
Typical costs (Claude Opus 5, as of September 2026):
- Input: $5 per 1 million tokens
- Output: $25 per 1 million tokens
- Extended Thinking: Additional costs for the reasoning process
- For comparison: the top model Claude Fable 5 costs $10 (input) / $50 (output) per 1 million tokens
!Tokenizer change since Opus 4.7
Anthropic has kept the nominal token prices unchanged since Opus 4.6 ($5/$25), but since Opus 4.7 the Opus line uses a new tokenizer that produces around 30 % more tokens for the same input. Real per-request costs are therefore noticeably higher than with older models, even though the price per token stayed the same.
What does that mean in practice?
- A simple code change: approx. $0.05-0.20
- A feature spanning multiple files: approx. $0.50-2.00
- A complex debugging session: approx. $2.00-5.00
- An intensive workday: approx. $5.00-60.00+
Advantage: No artificial limits. Ideal for teams, CI/CD automation, and fluctuating usage. Disadvantage: Costs are hard to predict. An unexpected debugging session can get expensive.
Cost Scenarios: Three Developer Profiles
The Casual User:
- Uses AI for code completion and occasional questions
- Approx. 2-3 hours of AI usage per day
- Subscription model: $10/mo (Copilot) -- all limits are sufficient
- Claude Code (Pro): $20/mo -- sufficient for casual usage
- Recommendation: Subscription model is cheaper
The Power User:
- Uses AI intensively for features, debugging, refactoring
- Approx. 6-8 hours of AI usage per day
- Subscription model: $20/mo (Cursor) + possibly $20-40 for extra credits
- Claude Code (Max 5x): $100/mo -- predictable and usually sufficient
- Recommendation: Subscription model (Cursor or Claude Code Max) with predictable costs
The Agent-Heavy Developer:
- Uses Agent Teams, Background Agents, parallel sessions
- AI running almost constantly in the background
- Subscription model: Cursor/Copilot limits often reached
- Claude Code (Max 20x): $200/mo -- sufficient for most users
- Claude Code (API): Approx. $500-1500/mo for extreme usage
- Recommendation: Claude Code Max 20x as baseline, API only when limits aren't enough

The ROI Question
Are these costs justified? Let's do the math:
Without AI tools:
- A senior developer costs approx. EUR 80-120/hour (freelance rate incl. overhead)
- 8-hour workday = EUR 640-960
With AI tools:
- Productivity gain: 20-45% depending on task type (McKinsey, 2024)
- At 30% more productivity, a $30/day AI tool saves approx. EUR 190-290 per day
- ROI: 6-10x -- every euro invested returns 6-10 euros
*The Hidden Costs
Don't forget the indirect costs: onboarding time, occasional incorrect AI suggestions that need debugging, and the time spent reviewing AI-generated code. The net productivity gain is realistically 20-35%.

Optimizing Costs
1. Choose the right model: Not every task requires the most powerful (and most expensive) model. Simple completions work just as well with cheaper models.
2. Minimize context: The more code you feed the model, the more tokens you consume. Focus on the relevant files.
3. Set budget limits: For token-based models: set a daily or monthly limit to avoid surprises.
4. Hybrid strategy: Use a subscription tool for everyday work and token-based tools only for complex tasks that truly need the agent.

Comparison with Subscription Plans
At low usage, the API model can be cheaper than a subscription.
A freelancer works on varying projects -- sometimes using AI intensively, sometimes hardly at all. Their monthly AI budget needs to be predictable. Which strategy makes the most sense?
Reflect
The cost of AI coding tools goes beyond just the subscription price. Token-based models offer flexibility, subscription models offer predictability. The optimal strategy depends on your usage profile. For most developers, the investment clearly pays off -- if they choose the right tool for their use case.
