Hands-On: Build Your Own Workflow
Learn
Bringing It All Together
In the previous modules, you learned about the individual building blocks of Claude Code: CLAUDE.md for project context, skills for reusable commands, hooks for automation, MCP servers for external integrations, and subagents for delegation. Now it's time to bring everything together in a real workflow.
What we're building: An automated code review workflow that analyzes code changes, checks for bugs, security issues, and style violations, and delivers structured feedback -- all orchestrated through Claude Code.
iWhy a Review Workflow?
Code reviews are one of the most common developer tasks and are perfect as an example: They require context understanding (CLAUDE.md), repeatable steps (skills), automatic checks (hooks), external data (MCP/GitHub), and specialized analysis (subagents).
The Plan
Our workflow combines all concepts from the Claude Code path:
| Concept | Use in Workflow |
|---|---|
| CLAUDE.md | Define project rules and review standards |
| Skills | /review command for consistent code reviews |
| Hooks | Automatic formatting and linting on changes |
| MCP | GitHub integration for PR access |
| Subagents | Specialized code reviewer agent |
Steps
We proceed in three phases:
- Project Setup -- Write CLAUDE.md, set up directory structure, connect MCP server, and define agent
- Set Up Skills & Hooks -- Create review skill, configure hooks for automatic formatting, and link the workflow
- Test & Optimize -- Walk through the workflow, calculate costs, harden security, and iteratively improve
*Hands-On: Follow Along!
This module is designed as a practical exercise. You'll learn the most by following along with the steps in your own project. Create a new directory or use an existing TypeScript project.
Understand
The core of a good Claude Code workflow is the separation of configuration (what the agent needs to know), automation (what happens automatically), and interaction (what you actively trigger). CLAUDE.md provides the context, hooks react to events, and skills give you control.
Apply
In the following sections, you'll build your own review workflow step by step. Start with the project setup.
Reflect
A well-designed workflow doesn't just save time -- it also ensures consistent quality. Every review follows the same rules, no check is forgotten, and you can adjust the workflow at any time when requirements change.
